There are three types of smokeless tobacco:

  • Chew
  • Snuff
  • Dissolvable

Chew is a loose leaf product that comes in a plug, brick or twist. The leaves have been cured and sweetened. The user selects the quantity of chew to be used. The tobacco is chewed and sucked until discarded.

Snuff is powdered tobacco. There are three different types of snuff:

  • Dry (nasal) snuff, which is flavored and snorted up the nose. A buzz from dry snuff lasts about 15-20 minutes. Comes in the form of bullets or canisters.
  • Moist snuff comes in cans and is the most commonly used smokeless tobacco product in the US. The user places the tobacco between the lip and the gum, spitting when necessary The tobacco comes in a variety of flavors.
  • Snus is portioned moist tobacco that is prepackaged in small teabag-like pouches. Snus does not require spitting, and pouches can be thrown away after use.
